After completing a three-year Bachelor of English degree at Canterbury University and three papers of a Diploma of Children's Literature, Karen has had a number of works for children published. She has had many reader's theatre plays for children published in Australia, New Zealand, England and the United States by Benchmark Education, South Pacific Press and Gilt Edge Publishing. She has adapted stories to reader's theatre by award-winning New Zealand author David Hill. She has also had articles and plays for children featured in the School Journal, published by the New Zealand Ministry of Education.
Karen also writes for adults and is featured in the New Zealand Poetry Journal 2022. She has written literally thousands of newspaper and magazine articles on a wide variety of topics and her work has been published in the New Zealand Herald, Sunday Star Times, Dominion Post, Christchurch Press and Next to name but a few.
Karen has worked for television production companies coming up with creative advertising concepts and scripts and has written a pilot for television for TV3.
Other achievements include being named a finalist in the Takahe Short Story competition and exhibiting her cartoons at Le Donne Ridono Biannual International Women Cartoonists’ Exhibition in Ferrara, Italy.
